Shipping household goods to Germany costs €1,150 to €7,500 for a 20ft container before door-to-door handling, customs, and inland transit. The duty-free path runs through Form 0350 at German customs (Zoll) and three eligibility conditions most expats only learn about after they have already paid the shipper.

Sea, air, or courier: which one fits your move

Sea freight in a shared 20ft container is the default for anything above 5 cubic meters or 1,000 kg. Air freight makes sense under 500 kg and under €4,000 of replacement value. Couriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS) work for under 100 kg of boxed personal effects, but the per-kilo price climbs fast above that.

The math people get wrong: shipping a full apartment via couriers feels cheap per box and ruinous in total. A 1,200 kg shipment via DHL Express to Frankfurt runs €6,800 to €9,200 by published rate. The same load in a shared sea container clocks in around €2,400 door to door.

Form 0350: the document that makes it duty-free

If you are moving from outside the EU, your shipment crosses a customs line. 1. Container arrives before Anmeldung is done. Customs holds the goods until proof of residence lands. Warehousing fees stack at €40 to €120 a day. Fix: time the shipment to leave origin 3 to 5 weeks after you land.
2. Inventory list is too vague. "Box of kitchen items" gets flagged. Zoll wants brand, model, age, value for anything above €500. Fix: itemize room by room with one Excel row per item over €100.
3. Recently purchased electronics. A €3,200 OLED bought 4 months before departure pays €608 VAT. Fix: keep electronics in the home for 6+ months before packing, or buy the same model fresh in Germany (often cheaper after duty math).
4. Form 0350 filed in the wrong office. It belongs at the Hauptzollamt that covers your new German address, not the port of entry. A customs broker handles this for €120 to €280.
